my 'doily doubting' ways...

i am busy today beavering away on something i wish to share with you next week.
(ah ha, yet another tale of intrigue and mystery to leave you 'hanging on')

however, before i get back to my 'beavering' ways i do have something else to share with you.
something i like,
but interestingly, i am quite 'hesitant' to unveil today.

usually i don't think twice, after all you are such a lovely lot when it comes to supporting me and my crafting epiphanies. this time however i'm 'hesitant' for it involves doilies
("oh blimey, Tif... what's the big fuss about? doilies are as old as the hills and you've had them in your work since time began")

you are quite right, dearest readers... but there is a difference.
this time i fear a hush will descend and then the term 'doily abuser' will start to ripple through the audience, whispered at first, then louder until a crescendo is reached and the chanting of "doily abuser" will be heard across all cyberland.

it started last week when the lovely dani emailed me with a question.
that little question prompted 'something' tucked far away in a drawer marked "for future crafting" to open, within my brain. it was like a "oh yes!" moment and so i got to work, and after the weekend i had the results of my efforts laid out before my clan.

they picked up my 'doily whatnot dishes', turned them around, inspected them closely... i might even add, marvelled somewhat as to how they were made...
then the question came
"are you going to put them in your etsy shop?" my man enquired
"i think so" i replied, still pondering, as to whether or not i had abused a doily

she is going to list them tomorrow (gulp) along with other goodies and perhaps locate some ear plugs just in case ~ Tif

  1. Darling these are amazing. Can you imagine them pinned to a wall in large numbers. Might be really cool. Or as a hanging light. Hmm. Might be dangerous. Abuse away I say. Lovely.

  2. No doily doubt at all...they are beautiful (abuse? no...repurposed). I've been (nicely) accused of vintage sewing pattern abuse but I still don't believe it's true.

  7. they are beautiful, tif!

i have some of these in my etsy shop, also, and so far no one has said anything about doily abuse. i, too, worry that some of my projects will meet protest, but here is how i feel about the issue:

all of the doilies and lace i used have been rescued from bins and shelves in thrift shops. which fate is worse, being reused for something useful and beautiful, or sitting in a smelly old shop?

i am not telling anyone to use their grandmother's doilies to make bowls or embellish notebooks (although a frame would be a nice tribute!), but--if after i pass away my handiwork ends up in a thrift shop, i would be honored for someone else to come along and make use of it.

    keep up the beautiful work!

katherine... thanks for the doily dish thoughts. it truly is a funny thing to imagine one day our stuff will be in the thriftstore waiting patiently for someone to come along and see it's potential for 'another life' :)

  13. How can using something (that is a dime a dozen)in a Beautiful way that releases it from the realms of a musty old Hope Chest be considered 'wrong'????

  18. Have no doily doubting fears at all, these are gorgeous! I think it's not the doilies you are doubting, but your own creative self.

  21. I am long convinced that you do not know how to abuse a doily. The bowls are so pretty. I love the Dottie Angel touch to them--it adds so much.

  22. Katherine put it so well. I saw similar dishes in my French mag, and went through the same doubts as you, but frankly, it's re-purposing - what's the problem? And yours look better than the ones in 'Avantages', anyway!

  23. Love them! I have seen them about before but I love the twist you have put on them with your Dottie Angel touch.
Might have to research how to!
